Serena Williams might have stepped away from the tennis courts in 2022, but she’s far from fading from the hearts of her fans and admirers.
The American icon’s legacy continues to inspire, and her influence hasn’t skipped a beat. And now, adding to the chorus of admiration, her longtime friend Andy Roddick has stepped forward with a fresh wave of praise.
The former American ATP star engaged in an interaction with journalist Jon Wertheim and Wilson’s racquet innovation manager Ron Rocchi for the October 29th episode of Served with Roddick podcast.
With Rocchi, he deliberated on a wide range of aspects and attempted to understand how players like Serena Williams tweaked their racquets to gain more control over the game. But as Rocchi detailed the process, he also made a remarkable revelation about Williams which left Roddick surprised.
Speaking in the interview, Rocchi said, “She (Williams) told me pretty early on, and I will never forget this. It was such a quote that you never hear from a player.
She said to me, “if you give me a racquet with all the power in the world, I’ll learn to control it,” and it floored me because I was like I have never heard that before.”
Indeed, for a player of Williams’ stature, making a statement about power would surprise anyone as she has depicted the same throughout her career.
With 23 Grand Slams under her belt and an Olympic gold that shines even brighter, Williams is known for her relentless strength on the courts. Hence, her admiration for getting a power boost depicts how hooked she was to attaining success in her career.
Meanwhile, this remark from Rocchi seemed to leave Roddick spellbound. Responding to him, the 2003 US Open winner said, “Unbelievable. I think I’ve been silent on this show like twice ever.” He emphasized Rocchi’s statements again and said, “Just give me all the power I’ll figure it out..” This, however, is not the first time when the former American player was left captivated by his friend’s grandeur.

I’m equal parts proud and impressed with her.” And this admiration was not just limited to the courts. Roddick, interestingly expressed his confidence when Williams took up a new task for herself after walking away from the sport.
