WNBA: Indiana Fever at Chicago Sky

It’s been just a few months into her WNBA career, and Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese already knows how to be at the right place at the right time. That’s where she was in the middle of the third quarter Sunday afternoon, snagging her teammate’s miss off the backboard, and throwing it back in for the quick layup.

With that play, the rookie made history by setting the longest consecutive double-double streak the league has ever seen.

Angel Reese’s 13 straight double-doubles top the record previously set by Candace Parker, who managed 12 in a row at the end of the 2009 and beginning of the 2010 season. Not only did Reese complete the feat without an offseason separating the games, but she’s also done so just 20 games into her rookie season.

The rebound to break the record was the 10th of 14 on the night for the rookie. She also added 17 points in a lackluster performance by the Sky, who fell to the Seattle Storm by a score of 84-71.

Despite controlling the glass, she struggled in the paint defensively against Storm forward Nneka Ogwumike and center Ezi Magbegor. Both of the Storm bigs grabbed 13 boards and combined for 37 points. In the third quarter alone, the Storm hit 10 of 11 shots in the paint and took off on a 29-14 run.

Angel Reese on pace to shatter all-time double-doubles record

The all-time WNBA double-doubles record of 193 is held by former Sky and Minnesota Lynx center Sylvia Fowles. Angel Reese is averaging a double-double in 65 percent of her games as just a rookie — at that clip, it’ll take her around 318 games to set that record.

Fowles and Parker both played just over 400 games in their career, and both stand taller than the 6’3″ Reese. Simply put, what she’s doing has definitely never been seen before.

She’ll look to make her continue her streak and make it as untouchable as possible in their next matchup against the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday. In her last matchup against the Dream, she pulled down a season-high 19 rebounds.

It’s hard to believe that Angel Reese is going to regress since she’s only 20 games into her first season. She hasn’t had a single-rebound game since May. But she will face a big test on Thursday against the No. 1-ranked New York Liberty, against whom she only tallied 10 rebounds against in their last matchup.

As for now, it seems like the only person in the league who could beat whatever streak she lands on is herself.
