Lando Norris came to Montreal having just presented the man of the match award at the Champions League final, and feeling stiff.

After honouring Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal with his gong on behalf of sponsors PlayStation, he took to the Wembley pitch last Sunday. His football prowess, by his own admission, does not remotely match his ability to steer a car at 210mph.

‘My skills were shocking,’ said the McLaren driver ahead of tomorrow’s Canadian Grand Prix. ‘People say, “You played well, but…”.’

He added: ‘I was broken. I am stationary in a car, but football is about twisting and turning. I run and do gym but this is stretching under load and fast acceleration. It is just different, because I’m fit and can drive and survive in an F1 car.

‘Physically, I am in better shape than other drivers.’
