Liam Payne had a heartbreaking wish for his son, Bear, as the singer worked to turn his life around before his death.

The One Direction star had sought help for his struggles with substance abuse and had been busy working on new music.

However, Liam sadly died at the age of 31 after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The Strip That Down hitmaker, who shared Bear with Girls Aloud star Cheryl, had a successful co-parenting relationship with his ex-girlfriend. Both parents shared a common goal for their son – to have as normal a life as possible.

Both Liam and Cheryl always kept Bear’s identity private, rarely sharing photos of him on social media and always hiding his face. Liam had previously praised Cheryl for being a “natural” mother and discussed their parenting approach.

Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Liam admitted it was “tricky” to protect Bear. He shared with host Steven Bartlett, “I think his mom’s hoping he’s going to become some sort of yoga person. His mom’s very chill these days.

He’s got the best advice from the parents around him in the long run, I guess. I dunno… obviously we’ve protected his identity to start off with.

That’s not being pretentious or anything other than the fact I want to give him a chance to be Bear first before he has to be your mom and dad are so-and-so.”

Liam added, “I made my choice to be where I was at 14/15 so I figure he can make his own choice then too.

We’ll have a good discussion about it, a long discussion because I know what effects that can have too.

But I would never stop him from doing something he wanted to do. I’d let him know the risks and I’d tell him what was going to happen better than that.”

When discussing his son’s potential career path, Liam hoped Bear finds “something that he enjoys doing every day.

And I say that lightly because I think everything that you do – depending on what kind of person you are – becomes annoying at a point.”

Cheryl has also opened up about her desire for Bear to have a normal life away from the spotlight in a 2023 conversation with British Vogue.

She shared an intimate moment with Bear, who was beginning to understand his parents’ fame at that time, saying: “I don’t want people recognising him on the street.”
