Despite 23 Grand Slams, Serena Williams Reveals Why She Feels ‘Salty’ Towards Sister Venus Williams

Serena Williams and Venus Williams aren’t just tennis legends—they’re also the epitome of sibling goals!

From ruling the courts to inspiring millions with their resilience, the Williams sisters have been rewriting the rules for decades.

But even in their unparalleled journey of dominance, they’ve managed to keep things real, showing that no matter how iconic you are, sibling rivalry is always in play.

And Serena? Well, she’s got a cheeky bone to pick with Venus! In a recent playful revelation, the younger Williams sister didn’t hold back as she admitted there’s one thing about Venus that makes her a little “salty.”

The 43-year-old tennis great engaged in an interaction with The New York Times and deliberated on a wide range of factors including her life after tennis and her off-court endeavors.

Williams also discussed the rivalry she shared with her sister on the court and highlighted her true sentiments. The 23-time tennis great claimed that had her elder sister not been in the picture, she would have maybe won a couple of more Grand Slams.

Speaking in the interview, she said, “I feel like if I didn’t have her, I would have minimum 30 (Grand Slams). You know, so I am kind of salty about her winning all those finals against me.”

Remember, the Williams sisters have played against each other 31 times on the tennis courts with 9 of them coming in the Grand Slam finals. Interestingly, Serena has depicted her dominance winning seven of these.

However, besides winning the two Grand Slam finals against Serena, Venus kept her at bay on some other crucial occasions like the Wimbledon Semifinals in 2000 and the US Open Round-of-16 in 2005, where the elder sister clinched crucial matches from Serena. But Serena did not highlight only one side of the picture.

Expressing her sister’s mettle, Serena Williams said that if it was not for the defeats against her, Venus would have won more Grand Slams too.

“I think Venus would have definitely had at least minimum 15 maybe more,”  Williams said. It is also because of this rivalry, that Serena probably highlighted why she disliked playing her sister on the court.

In an interaction on the Ellen DeGeneres show in 2022, this Olympic gold-medalist legend shared why she hated playing against Venus. “To me, the most frustrating thing about playing against my sister is that it’s like playing against myself.

I am pretty tough and she is pretty tough, so she gets every ball back, Every time I get a great serve, she’s [gets it back]. It would be an ace against anyone else but she gets it back.”

But besides the rivalry, the sisters have remained a close support system for each other. In fact, Venus Williams revealed how her sister motivated her to not retire from the sport anytime soon.

When Venus Williams revealed how Serena Williams motivated her to not quit tennis

Venus Williams has struggled to make a dominant comeback on the courts for quite some time now.

This year, the seven-time Grand Slam champion has participated in only two events: the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open, where she experienced early exits.

This has resulted in many speculations about her retirement from the sport. However, Venus has shared time and again that she is not retiring from tennis and a major factor behind the same is her sister.

In a video on her YouTube channel in January this year, Venus highlighted the desire of Serena. “My little sister, Serena, told me I’m not allowed to quit, and of course, I would never quit. But it’s the mandate. She said no, so I will be back on the court.” In 2022, Williams also shared that playing till the age of 50 is not out of the question for her.

For now, it would be interesting to see if the sisters would make more surprising and cheerful revelations about their bond.
