For the world champion silver medalist in 100m T64 and 400m T64, Hunter Woodhall, the games are more than just about medals. Speaking to Paralympics.org on 27 Aug 2024, Hunter Woodhall opened up about the demanding nature of the competition but also emphasized the profound impact it has on athletes.

Woodhall, who has struggled with disability since his childhood, knows exactly what’s the significance of being part of the greatest athletic events on the planet.

Overcoming the challenges of disability and bullying at school, Woodhall has turned himself into an ace athlete, becoming the first double amputee to earn an NCAA Division I scholarship. To him, the Paralympics are the perfect stage to showcase the limitless capabilities of human bodies.

However, he emphasized that it’s no easy feat. Tons of grinding and preparation goes into the making of a Paralympian. “It’s important to know how hard everyone at these Games works. We train every single day just like the Olympians – we’re prepared for this, we’re ready for this and a lot of people have dedicated their entire lives to this,” said the Paralympics runner. Now, he is ready to achieve a personal milestone at the Paris Paralympics.

Hunter Woodhall is all set to end the gold drought in Paralympics

Hunter Woodhall stole the show at the Paris Olympics after his cheerful celebration of his wife Tara Davis Woodhall’s long jump gold medal went viral. His long jumper wife claimed a gold medal after recording a distance of 7.10m, and Woodhall was the happiest man at the stadium.

Now, the veteran Paralympian has returned to the Stade de France, although not as a spectator. Instead, he is the top contender for the gold in the 100m T64 and 400m T62 events.

Paris Paralympics will be his third appearance at the biggest athletic event, and Woodhall will aim to be in the top spot on the podium. He bagged a silver and a bronze medal in the 200m and 400m, respectively, at the 2016 Games. Moreover, he also won the 400 m T62 bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

However, the coveted gold has eluded him till now. The France Paralympics is the perfect opportunity for him to end his drought and finally add Paralympic gold to his portfolio. Can he do that? Share your thoughts in the comments.
