Venus Williams opened up about her mother’s ‘theory of raising kids’

Speaking to People Magazine in 2022, Venus Williams opened up on the role her mother played in ensuring that she and Serena were aware of the importance mental health played in their lives.

“It’s important to engage in therapy even before you might have something exactly to talk about, to work through and prepare yourself for anything that might come up in your life. My mom always told us that, ‘you have to work on your mental strength’. That was her theory of raising kids…you also have to help them mentally be ready and prepared.”

In October this year, Venus Williams joined WNBA star Cameron Brink and SoFi Technologies as they launched the ‘Give Her Credit’ campaign. The campaign looks to support women pursue financial independence.

In an interview with People magazine in October, Williams expressed her surprise and dissent on women needing male co-signers for good chances of getting credit. She also hinted at her mother’s resilience, saying:

“It’s hard to really even fathom in this day and age that a woman would need a male co-signer,” Venus Williams said. “My mom is such a strong woman, I can’t imagine her needing a male co-signer in the ’70s to sign anything for her.”

During the same month, Venus Williams addressed rumors surrounding her retirement and said that she wouldn’t cry on retiring as she felt she’d given ‘everything to the sport’.
