Serena Williams Reveals Decades-Long Battle with Migraines: The Secret Struggle Behind the Tennis Icon’s Success.
Serena Williams, one of the greatest athletes in tennis history, recently opened up about an often-overlooked but significant struggle: her decades-long battle with migraines.
In a candid interview with *People*, the 23-time Grand Slam winner shared insights into the pain she has endured since her 20s, as well as how this invisible health issue has affected her career and personal life.
Known for her strength, determination, and unparalleled skill on the court, Serena’s revelation sheds new light on the untold challenges behind her athletic achievements.
Serena first began experiencing migraines in her early 20s, a debilitating condition that would periodically strike, often at the most inconvenient moments—during critical tournaments, in the middle of practices, and even in press conferences where she would have to conceal the pain.
Now 38, Serena describes how tough it was to keep her condition hidden, even from her father and longtime coach, Richard Williams. “Migraine isn’t something you can see.
It’s not like a swollen ankle or bruised knee,” she explained. “I couldn’t just go to my dad and say, ‘I have a migraine; let’s stop.’ People don’t see the pain, so you tough it out. I had to get used to pushing through.”
Throughout her illustrious career, Serena has had to manage the intense pressure of professional tennis while battling these silent but excruciating attacks. At times, she endured agonizing migraines during pivotal matches, like her 2001 loss to Conchita Martínez, which marked a major turning point.
“You can’t walk into a press conference with reporters asking ‘what happened?’ and tell them, ‘Oh, I had a migraine attack,’” she shared. “I had to find ways to work through it, to block out the pain.”
For years, Serena managed these attacks with limited treatments, coping as best as she could while maintaining her commitment to her sport. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the strain of lockdown life caused her migraines to intensify.
With quarantine restrictions in place, Serena found herself in the unusual situation of being off the court and at home with her family—yet facing even worse pain than she had during her active tennis years.
The combined pressures of raising her two-year-old daughter Olympia, adapting to a changed world, and managing the heightened stress of the pandemic brought her migraines to a near-daily occurrence. “It was a tough period,” she admitted, describing the relentless pain and uncertainty.
This ongoing battle with migraines, which she had previously kept quiet, has added a new layer to Serena’s already complex health journey.
Her physical resilience has been repeatedly tested; she has faced injuries to her shoulder and knees, endured a complicated pregnancy, and even won the Australian Open in 2017 while nine weeks pregnant.
Despite these setbacks, Serena’s approach to her career and personal life has always been forward-looking. She has continually set new goals, both on and off the court, and recently shared that she finally found a treatment to help manage her migraines.
As she prepares for the U.S. Open, she feels cautiously optimistic about her health. Although the tournament will be different this year, with the absence of fans due to COVID-19 restrictions, Serena sees this as just one more chapter in her journey—one more hurdle to overcome with the grace and grit she’s known for.
“Life throws us unexpected challenges, and I’ve learned that you have to keep moving forward,” she said. “Whether I’m on the court, at home with Olympia, or facing health struggles, I’ve realized that pushing through pain and finding solutions is part of who I am.”
Her battle with migraines, though largely hidden from the public eye, has been an integral part of her story and a testament to her strength.
Beyond her tennis achievements, Serena’s story has been a source of inspiration to millions worldwide. Her commitment to the sport, her resilience through adversity, and her fierce dedication to her family have made her one of the most admired athletes of her generation.
Her willingness to open up about her migraines sheds light on an issue that affects millions and serves as a powerful reminder that even the strongest among us have hidden struggles.
Serena continues to be a role model, not only for her athletic prowess but also for her courage in confronting and sharing her personal challenges.
Her journey with migraines, while painful and difficult, has shown her—and her fans—the importance of resilience and self-care.
Now, as she looks to the future, Serena remains focused on achieving new milestones, whether it’s claiming more Grand Slam titles, raising Olympia, or advocating for health awareness.
Stay tuned for more updates as Serena Williams embarks on this latest chapter, a testament to her indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to excellence.
