“I can’t comment on the details but in 2019 when I said I was going to start a team, a lot of people said I was going to lose a lot of money. I just wonder where they are now,” Serena Williams’ husband said, as quoted by Reuters.
“This is really just the start. I’m excited to see this continued investment and to keep building Angel City into what I know can be the biggest brand in all of women’s professional sports,” he added.
Athlos NYC
One of Alexis Ohanian’s more popular acts in women’s sports is the founding of the Athlos NYC meet, a women’s-only event in track. The inaugural edition took place in September this year and it had a total prize purse of $663,000.
A total of six events took place in the 2024 edition of the Athlos NYC, with the winners of each race earning $60,000 while the runners-up fetched $25,000. The athletes who came third pocketed $10,000.
Several top athletes competed in the inaugural edition of the meet, including Gabby Thomas, who won three gold medals at the Paris Olympics. Other notable athletes included Brittany Brown, Lieke Klaver, Masai Russell, and multiple Olympic medalist Faith Kipyegon.
UVA women’s basketball donation
Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian’s most recent contribution to women’s sports is making a huge donation to the University of Virginia women’s basketball program. The institute’s website claimed that the 41-year-old’s donation was the largest in the history of the women’s basketball program.
Ohanian, who is an alumnus of the University of Virginia, said that he was proud to help out his alma mater’s women’s basketball team.
“I am proud to support the women’s program at my alma mater with this donation. It’s time to bring the nation’s best hoops talent to Charlottesville and win some championships in the next four years,” Ohanian said.
