Famously known as Eminem or Slim Shady, the rapper, Marshall Mathers, has only one biological daughter: Hailie Jade Mathers. Evident in the Academy Award-winning rapper’s songs, his daughter has had a very weird childhood. In a span of just a couple of years, she lived in an unstable home where her parents had a toxic relationship, and she witnessed her father rise to fame and get extremely rich.

Mathers described her childhood as surreal on her own podcast, Just a Little Shady. In light of the stories she told and Eminem’s countless mentions of her in his songs, it’s easy to tell that she has been through the good and the bad.

How Hailie Jade Mather’s Parents’ Relationship Affected Her

Mather’s parents, Eminem and Kim Scott were high school sweethearts. The couple met at a party and started dating in 1989. Just a year later, they tied the know. However, their marriage wasn’t a happy one, as both of them struggled with substance ab*se that lead to a violent home. Nonetheless, on Christmas of 1995, Scott gave birth to their daughter.

To try and support his family, Eminem worked at restaurants and tried to keep food on the table. That only created more conflict in the relationship and led to Mathers being raised in an unstable house where her parents often fought about money.

The couple was together on and off for years and during that time they adopted together Alaina Mathers, and Scott had another daughter, Stevie, with another man. Growing up with Alaina and Stevie and living in a toxic environment, Mathers had a traumatizing childhood where no one was really around to take care of her.

Following this, Eminem told the story of how someone broke into their house, made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, then left. Only to come back later and steal everything but the couches and beds.

In an interview with New York Times Eminem said, “I was the worst kind of add*ct, a functioning addict. I was so deep into my addiction at one point that I couldn’t picture myself being able to do anything without some kind of dr*g.”

​Being surrounded by addicted parents affected Mather’s life tremendously. She grew an extreme fear of substance ab*se. It instilled in Mathers a fear of being around anyone who dabbled with substances or even drank alcohol at a party. Seeing the damage that addiction did, she tried to avoid it as much as possible.

However, things started getting better when she was 11 years old, as her parents decided to separate for good. By that time, Eminem had gotten signed and had become famous and filthy rich.

As the family’s financial situation got better, Mathers had a taste of normal life in her teens. She went to a school in Michigan, played sports, joined the art club, and served on the student council. Her father was very present in her life. She said, “My dad was working on something, and he was working the whole time, but he set up for us to do the limo and take it to Disney and we did the princess tea party. He had the dresses waiting for us, we were like both Belle or whatever.”

Only when she got older did she realize how cool and unique those memories are. She said on her podcast, “Thinking back as an adult, like, ‘Wow, that’s actually so surreal.’ Those memories of me thinking those were normal things, now I look back and I’m like, ‘Holy crap, that was cool.’”

Through the good and the bad, Mathers has come out on top. With a good relationship with both of her parents and a comfortable life, Mathers has been fortunate.
