Suri Cruise was the most anticipated release of 2006. The buzz around her birth was so strong that even before she was born she was making headlines. Needless to say, when she made her way into the world, Suri was fodder for paparazzi whether she, or her parents, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes liked it or not.

Given that the paparazzi followed Tom and Katie to document every moment of their lives, the interest in Suri was to be expected. This is why the Top Gun: Maverick star and Dawson’s Creek alum did their best to keep their daughter out of the public eye for as long as possible.

Because of this, tabloids speculated about Suri’s whereabouts for months after her birth. When she was finally taken out, Suri was strategically covered to shield her from intrusive paparazzi cameras until she made her highly-anticipated public debut on the cover of Vanity Fair with her parents. And now, 17 years later, Suri is ready to take the world by storm.

Updated July 2023: Suri Cruise is more independent now than ever. While her mom, Katie Holmes still wants to protect her from the public eye, Suri is getting ready to head off to college in a year. As such, she is busy making decisions about where she will attend school and even dipping her toes in the entertainment industry to see if it is something she wants to make a career out of.

Unfortunately, Suri still has no contact with her father, Tom Cruise. The two have been estranged since Katie and Tom divorced over a decade ago. As such, while Tom has been there financially for Suri, in every other way he has been absent. And this all ties back to Tom being a part of the Church of Scientology which does not allow relationships with family outside the church.

Tom is very close to his children he shares with Nicole Kidman, Connor and Isabella Cruise. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for Suri, who has not had a relationship with her father for over a decade.

“Suri does not know her father anymore and she has not spent time with him in a decade,” an insider explained. “She does not go to see his movies and he has no part in her life.”

This all has to do with Tom’s affiliation with Scientology. Those who are members are “forbidden” from interacting with “non-believers.” As such, unless Suri decides at some point in time to join the Church of Scientology, the relationship between the two will be forever broken. However, she still keeps Tom’s surname despite their being estranged.

9 Tom Cruise Pays $400,000 Per Year For Suri Cruise’s Child Support

When the divorce settlement was being finalized, part of what needed to be discussed was the child support Tom would pay for Suri. And that figure came to $400,000 per year or just over $33,000 per month that the Mission Impossible star would have to pay until Suri reached the age of 18 years old.

How that money has been spent, is unknown. Perhaps some of it was needed to ensure that Suri had security around herself as a child. Maybe it has been saved so that Suri has a little nest egg for herself. What it will not be used for is Suri’s college expenses. This is because Tom is on the hook for the tuition and board for wherever Suri wants to go to school, as per the divorce settlement.

8 Suri Cruise And Katie Holmes Have Always Been Very Close

Given that Katie raised Suri on her own from the time that Suri was seven years old, it makes sense that the two are incredibly close. And while this has been seen over the years via the vacations the two take together, the strolls they take around New York, or the shopping trips enjoyed, it was the pandemic that brought them closer still.

“[Suri] has seen “Dawson’s Creek,” and I think it’s probably weird since she’s a teenager,” Katie explained. “I’m not like, ‘You need to watch mommy’s work.’ But during the pandemic, we had a good laugh about it. It’s wild to have a daughter who’s almost the same age as I was when I began all this.

As such, Katie’s hope is that Suri chooses a college close to home so that she does not have to miss her daughter any more than she has to.

7 Suri Cruise Is Applying To College

Now that Suri is 17 years old, she needs to start thinking about which colleges are the best fit for her and begin applying. But it is not something entertainment industry related that is calling Suri’s name for a course of study. It is fashion design instead.

“Suri is applying to schools all over the place. [Katie] really does want her to stay in New York so they can be close to each other,” an insider explained. “Katie takes great pride in her but is also extremely overprotective.” Katie is also said to be “overwhelmed by the idea of her daughter going off to college.”

Currently, Suri is “leaning towards studying fashion in New York.” Whether that will remain her career choice remains to be seen.

6 Katie Holmes And Suri Cruise Have Multiple Interests

While it has been reported that Suri’s current interest is fashion design, she has been branching out as of late and dipping her toes in the entertainment industry. Something that shows Suri has just as much panache for all things creative, just like her mother.

Suri has been on the soundtracks for the movies, Alone Together and Rare Objects. These are both films that Katie has directed. And while it is nepotism at its finest allowing Suri to sing on the soundtracks, according to those in the know, if Suri did not have the musical chops and could hold her own vocally, Katie would never have allowed her to sing on her projects.

5 Suri Cruise And Katie Holmes Live Healthy Lifestyles

Independently, Suri and Katie live a healthy lifestyle that includes staying physically fit. While that means working out together from time to time, given the daily schedules that each has, it is not often. And that is fine with Katie who thinks that pushing Suri to work out with her at the same time would be “lame.”

“Sometimes I work out with my daughter. It just depends on the day,” Katie explains. “We have our routines, and occasionally they overlap. But I don’t force her to work out with me because I know that’s lame.”

As such, while they both share a love of health, that does not mean staying healthy has to be done together. But it is nice when it happens.

4 Suri Cruise Now Ignores Paparazzi

Years ago, the paparazzi were admonished for calling Suri a “little brat” when she did not want to smile for their cameras as a young child. Unfortunately, the paparazzi still have a huge interest in the 17-year-old. But now, instead of giving them something to write about, Suri ignores them.

Living in New York has given Suri a bit of freedom away from the paparazzi that she would not have in California, where she grew up. 2 Suri Cruise Has No Contact With Connor Or Isabella Cruise

Much like with her father, Suri has no contact with her siblings, Connor and Isabella Cruise. And because of their allegiance to Scientology, it again is being blamed for the lack of a relationship with the two. A sad state of affairs given that both Connor and Isabella used to call Katie “Mom.”

“Connor and Bella were apparently very close to Katie,” reporter Carlos Greer stated. “She’s talked about them in interviews. Tom has talked about their relationships in interviews. And there were even reports that they were so close that they even called her ‘Mom’ sometimes. So they had a really good relationship.”

However, once the divorce proceedings were set into motion and it was clear that Katie was not going to allow Suri to be raised as a Scientologist, the relationship with Connor and Isabella was obliterated. And Suri has not spoken to them since.

When making Alone Together, Katie was looking for a talented person to singBlue Moon. Knowing that her daughter had some musical prowess, Katie asked Suri to sing. And fans were blown away.

“Well, I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her,” Katie explained. “She’s very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing.” Fans agreed.

“Of course Katie Holmes’ daughter would be so talented! Good on you, Suri!” one YouTube viewer wrote.

Another stated, “I cannot stop playing this!! She sounds so wonderful and has so much control in her voice. I’m so impressed.”

“Wow! She sings soooo well! Way to go,” a third YouTube user said. “Hope we’ll [hear] more songs from her!”

With all the talent that Suri seems to possess, she is destined to do great things with her life. And with it just beginning she has a lot ot look forward to.
